The icons of the scooter world in post-war Italy.
Everyone in Italy was ready for a new beginning, a fresh start for everyone, getting mobile again and restarting the economy. Two entrepreneurs, Enrico Piaggio and Luigi Innocenti, saw the opportunity to do something for the Italian population. Then let the rest of the world enjoy and experience La Bella Vita.
This would also always be the case today, but people forget that it used to be more of a means of transport and today, it has become more of a collector’s item.
Two icons that competed against each other in everything like movies and commercials, divided the population. it was the case then, and it is still the case today.
The question arose among the divided population: which one was the best and the fastest, which one was the most beautiful, etc…and the discussion is still going on.
Vespa: elegant, round, large and mass-produced, with a large marketing budget behind the product, on all fronts at home, in movies and commercials, on TV and in magazines, with famous movie stars on the Vespa.
Lambretta: smart, simple, engine in the middle of the frame, motorcycle style, a different concept, also just as good in marketing but less flashy than Vespa.
How can you choose between the two icons? Vespa and Lambretta are both King and Queen; like salt and pepper on the table, they are both needed to get a good balance.
But there always remains that open question, who was the fastest, was it Vespa or was it Lambretta? That is a battle that used to be fought more than now on the street and circuit.
These days things have changed; Vespa still exists and is still being built, Lambretta is sleeping and no longer made.
But wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could take these two Icons of the scooter world out from under the dust and let them compete against each other in a great event like the Cannonball Scooter Run, and see with respect, who is now the fastest, the best and the most beautiful of the two.
Always with the thought, enjoy, drive, and respect each other. In the end, we are all scooterists.
